Job Description
Associate Software Engineer
Location:
Amman, JOR
Our mission is to unlock human potential. We welcome you for who you are, the background you bring, and we embrace individuals who get excited about learning. Bring your experiences, your perspectives, and your passion; it’s in our differences that we empower the way the world learns.
About The Role
We are looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team and contribute to the ongoing development of Wiley Science Solutions (WSS) Online Products, which include—but are not limited to—KIARA, Vanadium, SpectraBase, and DataHub. These products power scientific research and data access for customers around the world.
You’ll help build and maintain scalable backend services, responsive frontend applications, and efficient data processing and export mechanisms. If you’re passionate about building reliable systems, learning how things work end-to-end, and writing thoughtful, maintainable code, you’ll feel right at home here.~
How You Will Make An Impact
As a member of our team, you’ll:
- Work closely with a Scrum team to deliver key product areas such as License Management, Batch Processing, Export Engine, and Admin Dashboards.
- Contribute to both modernizing legacy systems and building new greenfield components using Spring Boot, TypeScript/React/Next.js, and cloud-based tools.
- Participate in the full development lifecycle — from refining requirements to designing APIs, writing unit/integration tests, managing async processes, and monitoring live features.
- Help build real-time and async features, such as CSV export over SSE, using techniques like producer-consumer batching, CompletableFuture, and BlockingQueue.
- Support the migration of monolithic and legacy code (servlets/JSP) into modular, maintainable modern architectures.
- Collaborate across teams to integrate with shared services, ensure system reliability, and continuously enhance performance and maintainability.
- Take part in peer reviews, design discussions, and continuous improvement efforts that shape how we build software.
What We Look For
- Strong understanding of core computer science principles — algorithms, data structures, and clean coding practices.
- Hands-on experience or familiarity with
- Backend: Java, Spring Boot, Spring Data JPA, QueryDSL, REST APIs, asynchronous processing, batch jobs, streaming data (SSE), and MySQL.
- Frontend: React, Next.js, TypeScript, Material-UI (MUI), React Hook Form, TanStack Table.
- Infrastructure: Git, GitHub Actions, Docker (or containerization basics), AWS (or equivalent cloud concepts).
- Comfortable working with domain-driven codebases and incrementally improving large systems.
- Willingness to dive deep into code and business logic, and the ability to think critically about technical trade-offs.
- A mindset of ownership — you care about your work from concept to production and beyond.
- Collaborative spirit — open to learning from others and sharing your knowledge.
- No degree requirements — we care more about how you think and solve problems than where you learned.
Growth-Focused Environment
- You'll have the opportunity to grow full-stack, working across the frontend, backend, and infrastructure as needed.
- We encourage T-shaped engineers: deep in one area (e.g., backend), with working knowledge in others (e.g., frontend, CI/CD).
- We value continuous learning — whether it’s digging into SSE specs, optimizing query performance, or designing smarter APIs.
