About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to help build and scale the core of our platform. You'll own features from start to finish, working with our web, mobile, and QA teams. You'll also take real responsibility for the infrastructure the code runs on.
This role suits someone who is comfortable writing a complex Laravel service in the morning and tracking down a slow query or deployment issue in the afternoon.
What You'll Do
Building the platform
• Design, build, and maintain scalable, secure RESTful APIs in Laravel that serve our Vue web app and Flutter mobile apps
• Own features across the whole lifecycle: technical design, implementation, testing, code review, deployment, and monitoring in production
• Design and optimize MySQL schemas and queries, including indexing, query profiling, slow query analysis, and handling growing data volumes
• Build and maintain integrations with third-party services such as payment gateways, webhooks, video and communication providers, and notification services
• Work with multi-currency payments, subscriptions, and financial flows where correctness and auditability matter
Infrastructure and DevOps
• Contribute to our DevOps practice, including CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure (AWS and local hosting), environment management, monitoring, logging, and incident response
• Apply security best practices throughout the stack (secrets management, access control, encryption, secure coding)
Quality and collaboration
• Work with QA to improve test coverage and release quality, including automated testing
• Contribute to our engineering standards through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and mentoring as you grow in the role
What We're Looking For
• 4–8 years of professional backend experience, with at least 3 years building production applications in Laravel/PHP
• Deep knowledge of the Laravel ecosystem: Eloquent, queues and jobs, events, scheduling, caching, API resources, authentication (Sanctum/Passport), and testing (PHPUnit/Pest)
• Strong MySQL skills: schema design, complex queries, indexing strategy, performance tuning, and experience with migrations on live systems
• Hands-on DevOps experience, including:
o AWS services such as EC2, RDS, S3, Elastic Beanstalk, CloudWatch, and Secrets Manager
o CI/CD pipelines (Bitbucket Pipelines, GitHub Actions, or similar)
o Linux server administration, Nginx/PHP-FPM, and Docker
o Monitoring, logging, and troubleshooting production issues
• Experience with Redis for caching, queues, or sessions
• A good understanding of API design, web security (OWASP Top 10), and system design
• Comfort with Git workflows, code reviews, and agile tools such as Jira
• Fluent in both Arabic and English, written and spoken
Nice to Have
• Experience with payment integrations, subscription billing, or multi-currency systems
• Familiarity with Cloudflare (WAF, load balancing, DNS, routing)
• Exposure to SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR, or other security and privacy compliance frameworks
• Experience with real-time features (WebSockets, Laravel Reverb/Echo, Pusher)
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation)
• Some familiarity with Vue.js, or experience supporting mobile app backends
• Experience working in healthcare, healthtech, or other domains that handle sensitive data
• Practical use of AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot)
