Why should we hire you?
It’s one of the questions we ask in any interview, and yet, it’s one of the hardest to answer. Candidates often prepare for this moment, offering rehearsed responses, trying to sell their skills, experiences, and achievements. But here’s the truth: as recruiters, we’re not just looking for the perfect answer. We’re looking for something deeper—something that goes beyond the polished resume and prepared pitch.
The moment of truth for any recruiter is not just about skills on paper or even the perfect answer to that question. It’s about connecting the dots. It’s about asking yourself, Can this person not only do the job but thrive here, grow with the company, and contribute to our culture in a way that goes beyond what they say in their interview?
The Hidden Answers Behind a Resume
When we sit down in that interview room, we’re evaluating much more than what’s on a resume. Sure, a great resume catches our attention, but we’re looking for the person behind the qualifications. We want to know, Do they really have the grit, passion, and drive we need for this role?
A candidate may list impressive accomplishments, but the real question is: Can they bring those experiences to life in a meaningful way?
For example, consider this: A candidate tells you they’ve managed a team in a previous role. Great. But how did they manage it? What challenges did they face, and how did they overcome them? Did they grow as a leader? This is where the interview gets personal—this is where we start peeling back the layers and getting a glimpse of who they truly are.
Skills Are Just the Beginning
Let’s face it—every role requires certain technical skills. But what makes someone stand out isn't just their ability to check the boxes. It’s how they use those skills to solve problems, drive results, and make an impact.
Ask yourself: What sets this person apart from the others?
Take the time to dig deeper. Ask questions that make candidates reflect on their work, like: Tell me about a time when you had to adapt quickly to a change or What was a moment when you felt truly proud of what you accomplished in your last role? These answers reveal more about their creativity, adaptability, and passion.
Cultural Fit: Can They Be a True Part of Our Team?
People often hear recruiters talk about "cultural fit" like it’s just a buzzword, but to them, it’s everything. A resume may tell us someone is technically qualified, but we won’t truly know if they’re the right fit until we see how they mesh with the team.
A company’s culture is its backbone. It shapes how people work together, how they communicate, and how they tackle challenges. If someone’s values don’t align with the company’s, even the most talented candidate will struggle to thrive.
So, as you sit across from that candidate, ask yourself: Does this person’s personality and attitude match the energy of the team? Will they contribute to the culture we’re building here?
The Real Question: Are They Excited?
Beyond qualifications and experience, the most important question one should ask themselves is: Are they truly excited about this opportunity?
Passion is contagious. It drives a person to go above and beyond, to innovate, to challenge themselves, and to grow. It’s not always easy to gauge, but when you find it, you’ll know.
Watch for subtle signs during the interview. Do they ask insightful questions about the company’s future? Are they eager to learn more about how they can contribute to the team? A candidate who is genuinely excited about the role is more likely to take ownership of their success and push the company toward its goals.
Trust Your Intuition
At the end of the day, hiring the right person often comes down to intuition. It’s not just about what’s on paper or even how well they answer questions. It’s about feeling confident that this person will add value, not just today but in the long run.
So, when you ask, "Why should we hire you?", listen closely. But also, listen to what’s unsaid—the passion, the drive, the commitment to being a part of something bigger than themselves.
That’s the real answer you’re looking for.
